The PHL Consulate General in Chicago, represented by Consul Melvin Almonguera, joined Filipino-American community organizations in opening “Unheard Voices of Care: Filipino Nurses in America” on 15 May 2026 at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago. The initiative was organized by the Filipino American National Historical Society Greater Chicago Chapter and the Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago, led by Ms. Ginger Leopoldo and Mr. Ruben Salazar, respectively.
Tracing the journeys of Filipino nurses from the 1940s to the present, the exhibit pays tribute to the sacrifices and lasting contributions of Filipino healthcare professionals who have become an indispensable part of the U.S. healthcare system. Through personal artifacts, photographs, journals, university yearbooks, and memorabilia, it highlights the courage, resilience, and dedication of generations of Filipino nurses who built lives and careers in America.
Mr. Angel Abcede, author of “House of Nurses: An American Journey,” which recounts the experiences of his mother and aunts who migrated from the PHL as nurses, served as co-curator of the project.
The exhibit will run until 02 August 2026 and will feature forums, live readings, and related activities celebrating the legacy and service of Filipino nurses. END
