CHICAGO 20 June 2024 – On 14 June 2024, Consul General J. Susana V. Paez, together with the members of the Knights of Rizal (KOR) and Consulate personnel, led the flag raising ceremony and wreath laying at the monument of Dr. Jose Rizal in Margate Park in commemoration of the 126th Anniversary of Philippine Independence.
Drawing inspiration from this year’s Independence Day theme, “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan,” Consul General Paez considered it fitting that the Consulate pay homage to the national hero who represents the hundreds and thousands of Filipinos who courageously fought for the country’s freedom and liberty.
In her opening remarks, Consul General Paez underscored the importance of the celebration, and urged all present at the event to “not take for granted the independence that we are enjoying right now, and remain fervent in protecting our democracy and freedom which our forebears valiantly fought for.”
After the Consul General’s remarks, Consul Ryan Francis Gener read the Independence Day Message of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. Area Commander, Mr. Mariano Santos, on behalf of the officers and members of the Knights of Rizal, also delivered a message.
The Rizal Monument in Margate Park, which is one of only two life-sized monuments of Rizal in the Mainland US, serves as a meaningful national heritage for Filipinos in Chicago and beyond. END.
