As part of its celebration of the 126th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago, together with the Rizal Center’s Pamana Children’s Library, held an interactive food activity entitled “Tara, Kain Tayo!” on 21 June 2024 at the Consulate’s Kalayaan Hall.
In her brief opening remarks, Consul General J. Susana V. Paez welcomed the audience, which was mainly composed of Filipino and Filipino-American children ages 3 to 13 years old and their parents, to a simple family celebration of food and culture. The Consul General encouraged the children to keep their passion for learning about their roots, and for the parents to continue instilling Filipino values and teach their children about Philippine culture and heritage.
The program featured Ms. Ginger Leopoldo, founding member of the Pintig Cultural Group and the founding Artistic Director of the Center for Immigrant Resources and Community Arts, and Ms. Nina Lahaliyed, owner of Brou’nē Dessert.
Ms. Leopoldo captivated the young audience with her lively storytelling composed of three Philippine food-related stories - Amihan’s Food Adventure: The Philippines by Sari Dewi Kusuma, Cora Cooks Pancit by Dorina K. Lazo Gilmore, and Purple Ube by Hannah Arp.
Meanwhile, Ms. Lahaliyed ended the program with a delightful sweet culinary experience for children where they can create their own cake jar infused with different Philippine flavors - ube, mango and pandan.
Ms. Genevie De Castro, a representative of Rizal Center-Pamana Children’s Library, opened and emceed the program. She was also the overall coordinator for the event.
During the program, the guests enjoyed the simple Filipino merienda from Leopoldo Catering and kakanin from Bou’rnē Desserts. END.
