PRESS RELEASE NO. 45-2022

CONSULATE GENERAL OBSERVES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

13 October 2022- The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago joins in the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October. Since 1985, the month of October has been recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the US meant to raise awareness about breast cancer and express support to those affected by it. Awareness includes the thrust of educating everyone about breast cancer and the reminder that early screening and detection can save lives. Though breast cancer is most commonly known to affect women, breast cancer does occur in men.

To lend its support, all frontline personnel of the Philippine Consulate General will wear pink ribbons, symbolizing breast cancer, for the whole month of October.

On 06 October 2022, Chicago Nightingales, a non-profit Filipino-American community organization in Chicago, turned over pink gift bags to the Consulate for distribution to its clients as part of the awareness campaign. Each bag contains breast cancer awareness fliers, handmade bracelets, pink ribbons and candies.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the US. Each year, about 264,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,400 in men. END
