07 April 2025, Clayton, Missouri - Chicago PCG Consul General Atty. Melanie Rita Diano, accompanied by Consul Ma. Theresa Alders and Mr. Richard Osea, visited the marker of the Philippine Village Historical Site, which was the location of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The exposition, also publicly known as the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, ran for eight months and brought in at least 19 million visitors to the city at the time.
The Philippine Village section, the fair’s largest section spanning over 40 acres, was the most controversial exhibit. Designed to introduce Americans to the Philippines, which was acquired as a colony by the United States in 1898 after the Spanish-American War, it showcased the Philippines’ different ethnic groups and tribes.
More than a thousand individuals from different ethnic groups and tribes travelled to St. Louis, Missouri, for the World Fair. At least 17 people died during the fair due to pneumonia, malnutrition, as well as suicide.
An historical marker was installed on 15 March 2024 at the Concordia Park in Clayton, Missouri, sponsored by the City of Clayton and the Mayor’s Commemorative Landscape Task Force. END
