Chicago, Illinois - The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago joined the Philippines in the observance of the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANAMo) during the entire month of September 2025.
The Consulate commenced the observance through a special flag raising ceremony held on the first Monday of the month, 01 September 2025.
The Consulate continues to explore possible collaborations with institutions, such as in Illinois the Field Museum of National History, which houses an extensive Philippine collection; the Newberry Library, which has in its possession an original Carta Hydrographica y Chorographica de las Yslas Filipinas designed by Fr. Pedro Murillo Velarde, engraved and printed by Nicolas dela Cruz Bagay in 1734, one of only twelve prints known to be in existence; and the Shedd Aquarium, which has a permanent exhibit called the Philippine Wild Reef exhibit showcasing the biodiversity of the coral reefs in the Philippines.

MANAMo is an annual celebration established by Presidential Proclamation 316 signed in 2017 to foster deeper appreciation of the nation’s maritime heritage. Following Executive Order 57 in 2024, the Presidential Office for Maritime Concerns (POMC) coordinates programs and activities for the yearly observance and celebration of MANAMo. This year’s theme is “Nagkakaisang Kapuluan, Panatag na Karagatan.” [END]
